GLC Workshop on Advanced Computing
July 13, 2007
Hosted by Northwestern University
University of Illinois, in partnership with Northwestern University are convening a workshop on July 13, 2007 and they invite their CIC colleagues (provosts and others) to this important event which will help shape the policy and infrastructure for large-scale collaboration in advanced computing in research and education among the Great Lakes Universities. This meeting flows from a set of workshops hosted by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2006. Although these workshops were focused on a petascale computing proposal to the National Science Foundation, it is clear from the discussions at these workshops that there are many exciting opportunities for partnerships between the Great Lakes Universities in advanced computing.
The workshop will provide an opportunity to further explore the research and educational opportunities available to the Great Lakes Universities as well as define the next steps to take in developing a "Great Lakes Universities Consortium" to foster partnerships among the Great Lakes Universities. Prior to the conference, we will develop and circulate a "white paper" outlining an organizational and management model for the Consortium based on that for the Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA). In addition, white papers will be developed for a potential research project ("Petascale Computing in Science and Engineering") and a potential educational project ("Virtual School of Computational Science and Engineering"). Other contributed white papers are welcome.
An agenda with presentations is available.
Computing Systems Software Workshop
December 14, 2006
Hosted by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA)
Topic of Discussion: What research projects can be undertaken by the members of the Consortium to enhance the computing systems software that will be deployed on the petascale system in 2010 and beyond?
Science and Engineering Applications Workshop
December 7, 2006
Hosted by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA)
Topic of Discussion: What science and engineering applications will have a significant impact on progress in these fields and have the potential to scale to a petascale computer?
Computational Science & Engineering Education Workshop
November 29, 2006
Hosted by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA)
Topic of Discussion: What do we need to do to educate students to enable them to contribute to the development of petascale applications and technologies and/or use petascale computing to address major science and engineering challenges?
The Great Lakes Consortium for Petascale Computation (GLCPC) facilitates the widespread and effective use of petascale computing to address frontier research questions in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics at research, educational, and industrial organizations across the United States. The National Center for Supercomputing Applications, on behalf of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is the lead institution for organizing and managing the GLCPC. © 2008 Board of Trustees University of Illinois.
